Parallax Knight
Parallax Knight
Parallax Knight is a small playable tech demo built to explore how pixel art, animation, and layered environments come together inside Unity.
The project accompanies my game-development content on YouTube, where I break down the process of taking an idea from an early visual mock through PixelLab and Aseprite, preparing the artwork for a game, and finally assembling everything as an animated, multi-layered scene in Unity 6.
The goal isn't just to create a parallax background. It's to explore how art direction, animation, depth, movement, foreground elements, environmental effects, and gameplay work together to make a 2D pixel-art world feel alive.
โ๏ธ The Demo
Take control of a knight running through an endless battlefield. Move between paths, avoid incoming attacks, leap over danger, and use a slow-motion aerial dive to crash back onto the battlefield.
The gameplay provides a moving test environment for the project's real focus: pixel-art integration and visual layering.
๐จ From Pixel Art to Unity
This project explores a complete asset workflow:
Concept & Mockup โ PixelLab Iteration โ Aseprite Editing โ Animation โ Export โ Unity Integration โ Layering โ Parallax โ Gameplay
Rather than creating every asset in isolation, artwork is repeatedly evaluated inside the actual game. Silhouettes, animation, scale, palettes, readability, and depth can then be adjusted based on how the assets really look in motion.
๐ฐ Building Depth With Layers
The battlefield is constructed from multiple independently moving and animated layers.
Distant mountains and castles establish the horizon. Battlefield scenery, ruins, flags, smoke, vegetation, and props create the middle distance. The playable ground provides the action plane, while nearby scenery moves rapidly across the foreground.
Different movement rates create the illusion of distance while animation within those layers keeps the environment alive.
๐จ Techniques Demonstrated
- PixelLab + Aseprite asset workflow
- Pixel-art cleanup and iteration
- Sprite animation and export
- Unity sprite configuration
- Sorting Layers
- Y-sorting
- Multi-layer parallax
- Repeating backgrounds
- Animated environmental elements
- Foreground and background props
- Camera-relative spawning
- Endless environment streaming
- Ambient particles and VFX
- Camera effects
- Reusable Unity components
๐ฎ Controls
W / S — Move between battlefield rows
A / D — Adjust running pace
Space — Jump / enter slow-motion targeting
A / D — Adjust aerial reach
W / S — Select landing row
F — Dive slam
Jumping isn't just traversal — it's your primary dodge. While airborne, slow time, adjust your landing point, and dive back into the battlefield.

๐บ Follow the Build
Parallax Knight was created as part of my HaddyForge game-development content, where I share pixel-art workflows, Unity experiments, technical demonstrations, and development of my own games.
The accompanying video breaks down how the assets and scene were created and shows the workflow from the original mockup through the finished Unity implementation.
Play the demo, experiment with the techniques, and then build something of your own.
